Padukka sits in the green, hilly edge of the Colombo District, where the city gives way to rubber estates and the road starts climbing towards Avissawella. Most visitors are surprised how much is packed into a half-hour radius: two waterfalls, a national botanic garden, a water park and a lot of very quiet countryside.

The closest waterfall to Padukka, and the one to pick if you only have a morning. It is tucked into thick forest, so it stays cool even in the middle of the day, and it rarely draws a crowd on weekdays.
Wear shoes with grip — the last stretch down to the water is uneven and slippery after rain. Go in the morning if you want the light for photographs.
The reliable family day out near Meepe, with slides, pools and food stalls. If you are travelling with children and the weather is good, this is usually the answer.
It gets busy at weekends and during school holidays, so an early arrival makes a real difference. Weekdays are noticeably quieter.
Sri Lanka's wet-zone botanic garden, on the edge of Avissawella. It is younger and far less crowded than Peradeniya, with lakes, broad lawns and collections of native wet-zone species.
Allow two to three hours if you want to walk the whole thing properly. There is shade, but it is humid — take water.
The larger of the two waterfalls within easy reach, and worth the extra ten minutes in the car. It runs hardest after rain, which in this part of the wet zone is most of the year.
Combine it with Seethawaka Gardens for a full day out — they sit in roughly the same direction from Padukka.
These are the things you only hear about once you are staying here. None of them are ticketed attractions, and that is rather the point.
Forested reservoirs in the catchment country near Padukka, part of Colombo's water supply. The setting is beautiful and the birdlife is excellent, but access is restricted and permits may be required — check locally before setting out.
Avissawella stands on the site of Sitawaka, capital of a 16th-century kingdom that held out against the Portuguese. There are ruins and river scenery around the town, plus the best selection of shops and places to eat in the area.
The river runs through Hanwella, north of Padukka, and the drive along it is one of the more pleasant hours you can spend nearby. Hanwella itself has a long colonial-era history as a river crossing.
This narrow-gauge line leaves Colombo and works its way out through the suburbs into rubber country, in no particular hurry. Padukka has its own halt on the route, so the journey itself is worth doing — and doubles as a way in if you are not driving.
Padukka sits at the start of the A4 corridor towards Avissawella, which is the main road into the hill country. That makes a few bigger destinations realistic as day trips — long ones, but realistic.
Villa Idda is a five-bedroom villa with a private pool at 38 B, Pitumpe North, Padukka 10500 — within half an hour of everything in the first section of this guide, and about an hour from Colombo.
You can book a single room from LKR 5,000 a night if it is just the two of you, or the entire villa from LKR 32,000 if you are travelling as a group of up to 12. Either way the pool, the Wi-Fi and the parking are included — which after a day at a waterfall is rather the point.
Within about half an hour you can visit Ranmudu Ella and Kumari Ella waterfalls, Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Gardens in Avissawella, and Leisure World water park near Meepe. The surrounding countryside also has reservoirs, the Kelani River and the historic Sitawaka area.
Ranmudu Ella is the closest at roughly 9.9 km, about a 17-minute drive from Villa Idda. Kumari Ella is around 16 km away, about 29 minutes by car.
Yes — Leisure World, near Meepe, roughly 9.8 km and about 18 minutes by car from Villa Idda. It is the most popular family day out in the area.
About 45 km, roughly a one-hour drive depending on traffic. Padukka is also served by the Kelani Valley railway line from Colombo.
